“Cropsey” is an urban legend, which has been thrilling the citizens of Staten Island, New York for a rather long period of time. The filmmakers of the documentary, based on this spine-tingling story, make an attempt to investigate the thrilling crime, connected with the mysterious disappearances of children on the island.
The legend of “Cropsey” they explore is based on real events. Five children have suddenly escaped, including Jennifer Schweiger - the girl of thirteen with a Down syndrome. The last one was found buried on the territory of Willowbrook in five weeks. All of them were living in the neighbourhood, but the investigation of their disappearances failed.
According to the legend there is a real-life boogeyman, connected with missing kids. Days he spends in the Willowbrook tunnels, and nights he comes out of there to snatch children of Staten Island.
The filmmakers Joshua Zeman and Barbara Brancaccio grown up on Staten Island and were very well familiar to the peculiarities of the case. In the documentary they undertake their own investigation following the facts and mysteries and try to reveal the true of “Cropsey”, whatever it could be.
