“Caves of Forgotten Dreams” is a documentary, written and directed by Werner Herzog. It is a first 3D film of Herzog, which offers us the exclusive facts about the Chauvet Cave. Placed in Southern France, the cave has always been the object of special interest for many of the scientists, historians and usual public. Herzog has gained an exclusive access to the cave, closed for general public because of a high level of toxins, produced inside the cave.
The Herzog’s crew, which consisted only of three men (the cinematographer, the sound recorder, and the assistant) permitted to enter the cave, had to wear special costumes and shoes to protect themselves from evaporation of carbon dioxide and radon.
The documentary tells the story of the Chauvet Cave, which both mystical and astonishing. The film is based on the unique footage and breathtaking shots of inside and outside of the Chauvet Cave, including the fascinating shots of the natural bridge called Pont d'Arc, which is situated not far from the cave. Besides the picturesque sights and shots of rare pictorial creations, considered to be the oldest known in the world, the documentary is also provided by interviews with historians and scientists.
